Councilperson At-Large Position B Steve Gillett has been a La Porte resident since 1969, graduating from La Porte High School before earning a Bachelor’s degree at Texas Lutheran College. He worked for the City of La Porte for thirty years, retiring as the Public Works Director, and was then asked to return for an 8-month tenure to assist the City as Acting City Manager.
Gillett served as a Board Member and President of the Texas Public Works Association (TPWA), of which he is a Life Member, and was selected as its Public Works Leader of the Year in 2004. He is also a Life Member of the American Public Works Association (APWA), a member of the La Porte-Bayshore Chamber of Commerce, a former member of the La Porte chapter of Optimist International, and offers regular volunteer sailing management for youth sailing, Special Olympics, and Wounded Warriors through the Houston Yacht Club (HYC).
Councilperson Gillett has been married to his wife Martha (former City Secretary for the City) for thirty years. Their children are Christina White and Crystal Boone. He enjoys boating, fishing, hunting, and reading, especially historic novels and non-fiction.
