Career Day
La Porte EMS participates with the La Porte Independent School District in conducting Career Day at the various school campuses throughout the school year.
About Career Day
To be successful in any job career you have to know where you’re going and how to get there. That means having a plan. And a good plan requires having the right information. That’s what Career Day is all about.
Young people today face an overwhelming number of decisions about their future such as what college to choose, major to declare, classes to take, and so on.
The EMS Profession
Career Day is to help you figure out your next move and to help insure that you’re well-equipped to compete at whatever you decide to do. La Porte EMS makes sure you will have a chance to hear from at least 1 of our paramedics on what it takes to become a professional paramedic and how to succeed in that profession.
Car accidents, gunshot wounds, heart attacks, and other life-threatening emergencies - they're all part of a paramedic's job. No matter the situation, it is always about caring for people.
Training
The type and amount of medical treatment administered depends on the level of training the EMS professional has. EMT levels are:
- Basic
- Intermediate
- Paramedic
Additional training and job experience are required at each level. Hours of training vary from 140 hours for a Basic EMT and 1,000 - 2,000 hours for a Paramedic. With each level comes increased duties and responsibilities
Paramedics
Paramedics perform more advanced pre-hospital care. They may administer drugs, read EKGs, or perform invasive procedures such as opening airways and advanced cardiac life support.
